History of Sheffield

Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough of South Yorkshire, England. Its name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. Historically a part of the Wes Riding of Yorkshire, and partly Derbyshire, the city has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base. The population of the City of Sheffield is 534,500 (2008 est.) and it is one of the eight largest regional English cities that make up the English Core Cities Group.

During the 19th century, Sheffield gained an international reputation for steel production. Many innovations were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population during the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield received its municipal charter in 1893, officially becoming the City of Sheffield. International competition in iron and steel caused a decline in traditional local industries during the 1970s and 1980s, coinciding with the collapse of coal mining in the area.

The 21st century has seen extensive redevelopment in Sheffield along with other British cities. Sheffield's gross value added (GVA) has increased by 60% since 1997, standing at £9.2 billion in 2007. The economy has experienced steady growth averaging around 5% annually, greater than that of the broader region of Yorkshire and the Humber.

The city is located the valleys of the River Don and its four tributaries, the Loxley, the Porter Brook, the Rivelin, and the Sheaf, from which the city takes its name. 61% of the Sheffield’s entire area is green space, and a third of the city lies within the Peak District National Park. There are more than 200 parks, woodlands and gardens in the city, and an estimated 2.5 million trees, giving Sheffield the highest ratio of trees to people of any city in Europe

Settlement

Alright. After reaching Manchester, Sheffield Hallam University will send representatives to bring the students from Malaysia back to Sheffield to their hostel by bus. Apparently the hostel that my new families are going to stay is called "The Trigon" It takes about one and a half hour from Machester airport if I am not mistaken.

The front view of our hostel. Apparently it has been said that "The Trigon" is the best hostel for the current year because it is the newest. To me, i had visited Charlotte Court and it is the same. Only that the furnitures are a bit thorn out.

Bed Sheets all provided, 1 bed mattress, 1 Pillow with its casing and 1 Blanket with its casing. Toilet is fully equipped with common necessity, toilet bowl, bath place and place to brush your teeth.

 Cooking utensils are provided too. 1 frying pan, 1 pot, 1 plate, 1 bowl, 1 cup, 1 pair of fork and spoon. For chinese who prefer using chopstick, you will have to bring yourself.

 There will be a drawer provided and a cubicle right next to the table to give you the comfortness of arranging your stuffs. A heater is provided too to give you the warmness that will be needed during cold weathers.

Extra things are there is also a cupboard for us to place our clothes in it. Not very spacious but more than enough for the 3 months clothes. As I am a guy, so i am saying on behalf of a guy, for girls I am not sure as our course only have 16 person and all of them are guys. XP

As the above pictures shown are the things available inside the room. Thw below pictures will be pictures of the living room, kitchen and others.

The kitchen. Fully equipped with fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster. And chairs in the kitchen will have about 4 - 6 charis depending on the rooms available in the apartment. If there are only 4 rooms, there will only have 4 chairs.

The laudry room. The place for you to wash your clothes. Every week you are entitle to get 2 tokens. 1 token for wash and the other token to dry your clothes. Detergent you will have to buy yourself.

This is the common room. Every in "The Trigon" shares this place. Whenever there is football match, this place will be fully pack!!! So better reserve your place by coming earlier. XP
